A legislature committee has deferred a decision on a new pension scheme for MLAs until the fall, but Alberta's Wildrose party says government members have still left the door open to a "gold-plated" plan.
On Tuesday, the Tory-dominated members' services committee rejected a full defined benefit plan, a pension system criticized by the Wildrose and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who have argued it places too high a burden on Albertans and could create an unfunded liability.
The legislature members' services committee is dissecting a number of recommendations on MLA pay and perks made by former Supreme Court justice John Major, who published a report on the issue last month.
Major called for scaling back the generous lump-sum MLA transition allowances - which paid out a total of more than $15 million to departing MLAs earlier this year - and eliminating a yearly RRSP allowance that politicians could spend on whatever they wanted.
Instead, Major said most Canadian jurisdictions provide their legislators with defined benefit pension payless car rental in orlando plans. He said given the short political careers of most MLAs, a defined payless car rental in orlando benefit payless car rental in orlando plan is fair, reasonable and "the optimal approach."
Liberal Leader Raj Sherman excused himself during the vote on the pension motion. He has long argued it's a conflict of interest for MLAs to be making decisions about their own compensation packages.
