The south wing of the local landmark was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. Orillia cruises caribean firefighters responded at about 12:30 a.m. to find "two distinct areas that had two different fires going," Fire Chief Ralph Dominelli said.
The north-end building closed three years ago and had been ordered demolished by both Smith and the fire department. To fight the fire Saturday, workers had to tear down the same boards and fences the city had to put up in an attempt to keep people out.
The Sundial's current owner - Halifax-based cruises caribean Royal Host - "will probably get some bills" for the resources the city put toward tackling the fire, Smith said. The company is billed every time the city has to board up the windows or fix the fence.
The fence has been repaired after crews had to knock it down to get the fire. Also, 24-hour security was expected to be on the premises until sometime today. Before security was onsite, people were walking right up to the building. It poses "quite a risk, and (Royal Host) knows that," Smith said, noting the company cruises caribean has been told of the safety concerns.
A public works employee was dispatched the scene with a backhoe to assist firefighters. The machine was used to tear down as much of the impacted area as possible, as there was fire in concealed spaces in the ceiling, making it too dangerous for firefighters.
