The first-year Calgary Stampeder wore 52 all through training camp, but once final cuts were done and players who'd made it through were given the opportunity to choose numbers for the regular season, he jumped at the chance.

"We have a really good relationship. The guy did great by this organization, he had a great career here. I know I have big shoes to fill, but I'm going to take the challenge and keep working," said West.
"It was a last-second thing. I was looking for a different number and this was the only one that was available. I said, hey, what the heck. There's no number I'd rather take than his number and represent him, but continue to build my own legacy. Big shoes to fill, but I'm ready for it."
And for one day, anyways, defensive end Kenny Pettway sported the No. 51 jersey that was last worn by Alondra Johnson in 2003, but had to give it up for No. 36 because of league rules governing what numbers can be worn on the defensive line and on special teams.
